LPN Training

After you have applied and been accepted to an LPN training program – now what? What can you expect to learn as an LPN that will help you become a part of the health care professional team and provide care for those in need of medical attention? There are many skills which are learned throughout the entire training process, all of these skills are used in conjunction with one another to gain the best possible education that can help to further the patients and clients that is worked with regularly.

Here is an overview of the things that can be expected to learn as an outcome of LPN training programs:

One can expect to learn the fundamentals of nursing, meaning what it means to be a nurse and what it means to care for patients. These nursing foundation courses are seen throughout every program and enable the student to learn the history of nursing and the basic skills that the nurse will need to encompass as a caregiver.

The student will learn how to care for patients by performing simple diagnostic tests. These may include tests like measuring blood pressure readings or obtaining heart rates and also temperature readings, as well as the normal ranges for these readings. Once the patient has been assessed, the LPN can further develop the range of normal and determine if the patient is in need of help or if the patient’s vital signs are in danger.

The LPN can learn care of wounds and dressings and perform routine changes and assessments of types of injuries which require dressing changes. The LPN will learn through the course of training how to identify a wound that has become infected and measures that can be taken to reduce the chances of the wound becoming infected. This way, preventative care can be taken through measure of the wound and the wound can remain clean. Through the training the importance of clean wounds and infection prevention will be addressed in depth.

Pharmacology training is an essential training of the LPN training. These courses will provide the LPN with an introduction to different drugs and groups of drugs that exist. It will also provide the student with the information needed to make a decision regarding the interaction between certain drugs to work as part of the care team to reduce the chances of interacting drugs being given to a patient.

Skills are learned that can help the student to assist the patient with grooming and other personal practices such as moving patients from beds to mobility means such as wheelchairs and walkers. These techniques will outline all of the tools and mechanisms which are used to expedite this process and therefore the student requires knowledge of these mechanisms and procedures used with each.

There are a multitude of opportunities available for LPNs to further their education. Operating room course and orthopedic courses are the most popular for LPNs seeking to advance their knowledge and up their pay grade, which are all available through continuing education courses.
